Thyroid Hormone Imbalance

Thyroid hormone balance is essential in order for the body to function properly. Some of the bodily functions that rely on thyroid hormone balance include energy regulation, growth, weight control, body temperature regulation, tissue restoration, carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism, digestion, blood flow, hormone secretion, and sexual function. Therefore, it is crucial for the thyroid to perform at an optimal level.

Some common symptoms of hypothyroidism include:

Cold intolerance Inability to lose weight
Constipation Irritability
Depression Memory loss
Dry skin and hair Muscle aches and cramps
Fatigue Weakness
Hair loss Weight gain

Thyroid complications can arise at any point during one’s lifetime. Hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone, is very common. Blood samples taken at a physician’s office often rely on a TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) level to determine thyroid function. TSH stimulates the production of T4 (thyroxine), which is relatively inactive and T3 (tri-iodothyronine), the biologically active hormone. The TSH level may be within the normal range, meaning sufficient T4 and T3 are being produced. What the TSH level fails to show is the ease with which the body converts T4 to T3. If the body has trouble converting T4 to T3, then the patient will continue to experience symptoms of hypothyroidism, despite their “normal” TSH level. If a patient’s TSH level is low, levothyroxine is usually prescribed. However, this medication only works on the T4 hormone. T4 must be converted to T3 in order for the thyroid to optimally function. Therefore, when considering thyroid hormone replacement, it is essential to replace the T4 and T3 hormone. A simple blood spot test, done in the comfort of your own home, can accurately depict the levels of T3 and T4 that are working in the body. After talking with your physician, we can compound a prescription of natural thyroid hormones in order to help you feel your best.
